Back to School: Co-Parenting & Child Custody

September 13, 2023 //  by Brittany Klein//  Leave a Comment

With school back in session, we know that many parents are trying to co-parent properly.

In Placer County, child custody arrangements and visitation schedules are typically determined based on the best interests of the child by the court.

While specific school schedules may vary between different schools and districts, custody arrangements often take into account the child’s educational needs and attempt to maintain stability and continuity in their schooling. Here are some key considerations regarding school schedules and child custody in Placer County:

  • Parenting Plan: When parents are involved in a divorce or separation, it is important to create a parenting plan that outlines custody and visitation arrangements. This plan should include provisions regarding the child’s school schedule, transportation to and from school, and participation in extracurricular activities.
  • Best Interests of the Child: The family court in Placer County prioritizes the best interests of the child when determining custody arrangements. Factors such as the child’s age, educational needs, health, safety, welfare, relationship with each parent, and proximity to school are taken into consideration. The court aims to minimize disruptions to the child’s education and maintain consistency in their academic environment.
  • Joint Decision-Making: In many cases, parents are encouraged to make decisions about their child’s education together. This includes decisions about school enrollment, extracurricular activities, and any special educational needs. Cooperation and open communication between parents can help ensure that the child’s educational needs are met effectively.
  • School Notification: Both parents should keep each other informed about important school-related matters, such as parent-teacher conferences, school events, and academic progress. Sharing information and involving both parents in the child’s education can help foster a supportive and nurturing learning environment.
  • Flexibility and Adjustments: School schedules can change over time, with variations in start and end times, holidays, and breaks. It is important for parents to be flexible and willing to make adjustments to custody schedules when necessary to accommodate the child’s school calendar. Open communication and cooperation between parents can facilitate these adjustments.
  • Mediation and Court Proceedings: If parents cannot agree on custody and visitation arrangements related to school schedules, they may seek mediation or, if necessary, bring the matter before the family court. Mediation provides an opportunity for parents to work together with a neutral third party to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement. If an agreement cannot be reached, the court will make a decision based on the child’s best interests.

It is important to consult with an experienced family law attorney in Placer County for personalized advice regarding child custody and school schedules.

Our team at GAJP, P.C. can provide guidance and assist you in navigating the legal process to ensure that the child’s educational needs are appropriately addressed within the custody arrangement.
